Citizens’ initiative submitted to end bullfighting in Mexico City

04-09-2024

A citizens’ initiative to end bullfighting and cockfighting in the Mexican capital was submitted in Mexico City on September 1. The citizens’ initiative is an initiative of México Sin Toreo – of which CAS International is a member – and Cultura Sin Tortura. 30,141 citizen signatures have been collected.

Over the past 20 years, several bills have been proposed by elected representatives to end bullfighting. Unfortunately, these bills never reached a vote. In 2012, for example, the vote was blocked. Estefania Pampin Zuidmeer, CAS International campaigner:

“Just like in Colombia and Ecuador, Mexico faces the constant obstruction of bills to ban bullfighting. All kinds of tricks are used to prevent a vote. This is obviously done by politicians and parties that support the bullfighting industry.”

Citizens’ initiative

To prevent another blockade of the vote on the bill, our Mexican colleagues decided to start a citizens’ initiative. Once the minimum number of required signatures is met, Mexico City’s congress is obliged to consider the issue and put it to a vote. Since last February, the organization Cultura Sin Tortura (Culture Without Torture) has been collecting signatures for the citizens’ initiative. Cultura Sin Cultura is also part of the México Sin Toreo (Mexico Without Bullfighting) platform.

The bill is expected to come up for a vote in the second or third week of November.

México Sin Toreo

The México Sin Toreo coalition was formed to stand up against the corruption and impunity in the country, which protects the elite of wealthy businessmen who maintain bullfighting. From this coalition, CAS International will continue to fight so that the law is enforced and no more bullfights take place in Mexico.
